VIDEO: L.A. DA Gascon Calls Mother of Murder Victim Uneducated When She Confronts Him About Her Son’s Case

The public relations nightmare continues for Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, who (fortunately) has an extremely difficult time keeping his true thoughts and feelings hidden.

As I reported earlier, Gascon and his spokesperson both made retaliatory, threatening statements directed at Deputy DA Jonathan Hatami after Hatami publicly called out Gascon’s anti-victim and likely illegal Special Directives. Now, video has emerged of Gascon calling the mother of a murder victim uneducated when she and families of other murder victims confronted him outside of the Pomona courthouse Friday.

For background, Gascon hasn’t met with a single victim since he took office, leaving his Deputy DA’s to inform families that special circumstances or enhancements won’t be filed in their case. So when the families heard that Gascon would be meeting with his staff at the Pomona courthouse on Friday they made their way there in an attempt to be heard.

Of course, Gascon had nothing to say to the victims, the people he’s supposed to be serving. He attempted to ignore them while he addressed his employees.

The mother of Joshua Rodriguez, who was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in 2015 was there. According to Fox LA’s Bill Melugin, special circumstances were recently filed in that case but under Gascon’s new directive those will be removed and even a sentence of life without parole won’t be a possibility.

Loretta Verdugo-Majors was also there. Her sister was murdered in 1993 by a co-worker who believed he was passed over for a promotion that she received. The murderer received a death sentence, which was overturned on appeal. With Gascon now in charge, that penalty phase retrial won’t happen.

When Gascon graced them with his presence, he said:

“It’s unfortunate that we have people that don’t have enough education to keep their mouth shut for a moment so we can talk…”

What were you going to say to them, Mr. Gascon? That the people who tortured and killed their loved ones will “probably” end up in prison for life anyway, so what are they upset about?

After the video got out, Gascon claimed that he thought they were hecklers. Nevermind that Joshua’s mother can be heard talking about her child being murdered and tortured.

The statement reads:

While talking to colleagues outside of the office there were individuals yelling on opposite sides of the crowd. I did not understand what they were yelling about until later, let alone that they were victims.

Oh, so just talking to constituents that way would be cool? Yeah. Right. The statement continues:

Regardless, it’s not how I should have reacted. Clearly this family is in pain, and I will be contacting them to speak to them directly and hear them out. The defendants in this case are all facing life in prison.

See, he couldn’t resist – he had to put that last sentence in about the defendants facing life in prison. Well, maybe. It’s 25 years to life. Which means they are eligible for parole in 25 years. Or less.

And, who wants to bet that when Gascon speaks to them, there’s some mob boss type language involved, chastising them for being so loud and going to the press?

DDA Hatami issued a statement about the incident:

Calling mothers who lost their children “uneducated” is disgusting. It is unbecoming of an elected official of Los Angeles County. I am asking every member of the Board of Supervisors to denounce this arrogant and discriminatory behavior. It should not be allowed in our diverse and loving community.

It’s also interesting to note that the first group Gascon met with after being sworn in – literally minutes after the ceremony ended – was Black Lives Matter. While his staff waited to hear from their new boss, Gascon went outside to address that group. They didn’t have to track him down and shout at him from across a courtyard to be heard. Proving, once again, who Gascon’s real client is.
