President Donald Trump was taken to the hospital on Friday, October 2 after being diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus late Thursday and having some low oxygen saturation numbers and a fever.
While the president received the anti-viral drug remdesivir, his doctor Sean Conley also announced that he had also received an eight gram dose of the experimental antibody cocktail from Regeneron.
The treatment has shown preliminary effectiveness in reducing the viral load and symptoms of people infected by the coronavirus by making their body better able to fight off the virus.
“He completed the infusion without incident,” Conley wrote.
“In addition to the [….] antibodies, the president has been taking zinc, vitamin D, famotidine [an antacid], melatonin and a daily aspirin,” according to the memo.
According to Trump’s doctor, the president had “no symptoms” on Tuesday.
It’s the Regeneron cocktail that made Trump’s treatment stand out from that which many have gotten and to which the president is pointing for his recovery.
It’s pretty remarkable if he no longer has symptoms. Trump said he felt better immediately after taking the cocktail. Not only that he wants everyone else to be able to have access to it too, if their doctors think its appropriate.
The president said there were hundreds of thousands of doses that were just about ready and that he anticipated signing an emergency use authorization for the treatment. And that he wanted to get the doses to the hospital to provide free for people to be able to use.
He said he also anticipated vaccines coming in soon.
“I think we should have it before the election, but frankly, the politics gets involved, and that’s okay. They want to play their games, it’s gonna be right after the election, but we did it. Nobody else. Nobody else would have been able to do it. The FDA has acted as quickly as they’ve ever acted in history,” said Trump.
While the drugs are touted as therapeutic, the president said he views them more as a cure.
“For me, I walked in, I didn’t feel good. A short 24 hours later, I was feeling great. I wanted to get out of the hospital and that’s what I want for everybody. I want everybody to be given the same treatment as your president because I feel great. I feel like, perfect,” explained Trump. “I think this was a blessing from God that I caught it. This was a blessing in disguise.”
If in fact it can help reduce symptoms that fast and reportedly kickstart the antibody process, that could revolutionize the treatment of the virus even before a vaccine.
