This candidate could be the Democrats’ wet dream for California Governor. National Name recognition. Media experience. And as a transgender woman, she hits the intersectional trifecta.
So what could go wrong?
Well… She. Is. A. Republican.
From the Axios scoop:
Former reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner is talking with political consultants as she actively explores a run for governor of California, three sources with direct knowledge of her deliberations tell Axios.
Jenner is being assisted in her consideration by Caroline Wren, a longtime GOP fundraiser. Wren initially met Jenner through her work with the American Unity Fund, a GOP nonprofit focused on LGBT issues.
Wren previously worked at Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee for President Trump’s 2020 campaign, and also helped organize the rally he addressed immediately before the U.S. Capitol assault on Jan. 6.
Jenner is not only a Republican, but a member of the well-established Log Cabin Republicans. This 40-year-old organization has worked within the Republican Party to advocate for equal rights for LGBT Americans, and they hold a lot of juice nationally.
Jenner also previously supported Trump, but denounced him in 2018 because she felt his stance on LGBTQ issues was not serious. So you know that warms the cockles of GOP-elite and NeverTrumper hearts.
If Jenner does mount a gubernatorial run, it won’t only be just the Democrats who need antacid relief. The grassroots activists (on both sides of the aisle), many of whom are involved in the Recall of Gavin Newsom, will be a force to be reckoned with. Part of their upset with Newsom is the push to incorporate sexual education curriculum into the public school classrooms. This curriculum specifically targets elementary school-age children for transgender education reprogramming. These activists would be none too happy to have Jenner enter the race, because of the potential for her to be a poster child.
If these activists can organize and get 2.1 million signatures, you know they will do all they can to tank Jenner’s ambitions.
Don’t doubt me.
The other potential Republican candidate getting a ton of buzz is former Ambassador to Germany and Director of National Intelligence Richard “Ric” Grenell. Grenell is openly gay, and according to sources, Grenell and Jenner are friends through their involvement in the Log Cabin Republicans. Anyone in California who is on the Trump train (hello, Huntington and Newport Beach) will automatically give Jenner a hard pass in favor of Grenell.
Then you have the Democrat, Left, and Non-Party preference transgender community, who aren’t all that enthused either.
Any way you slice it, if Jenner does run, average white men like businessman John Cox and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer can kiss their candidacies goodbye. Let’s be honest: anyone run-of-the-mill, no matter which side of the aisle they’re on, just ain’t gonna cut it. We crossed that Rubicon back in 2016, and there is no going back.
Time to pop.
